Mission Refugio and Our Lady of Refuge Church

Spain founded Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio in 1793, and it was the last Spanish mission founded in Texas. It moved to the Mission River in 1795. Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, finished in 1901, stands on the mission site today.

Refugio County Museum

The museum sits in Heritage Park at US 77 and West Street. Its exhibits cover the Spanish mission, the Irish settlers, ranching, and oil. Visitors can see Frederic Remington bronzes and Nolan Ryan memorabilia, and the 1876 Linney-Huson house is next door.

Battle of Refugio and Nolan Ryan’s Hometown

Texian and Mexican forces fought here from March 12 to 15, 1836. Many of the Texians captured in that battle were later executed at Goliad. Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan was born in Refugio in 1947.
