Exploring Goliad, TX From Dad’s RV Park

Goliad is about 25 to 30 miles southwest of Dad’s RV Park on US 59. It has some of the oldest Spanish colonial sites in Texas, plus a busy courthouse square. History buffs can cover all of it in one day trip from Victoria.

Mission Espíritu Santo

The Franciscan mission was founded on Matagorda Bay in 1722. It moved to the Guadalupe River near Victoria in 1726, then to Goliad in 1749. Civilian Conservation Corps crews rebuilt it from 1933 to 1941, and it’s now part of Goliad State Park.

Presidio La Bahía and the Fannin Memorial

Col. James Fannin and about 350 men were held at this Spanish fort before their execution in 1836. That event gave Texas the battle cry “Remember Goliad.” The Fannin Memorial Monument nearby marks their burial site.

Courthouse Square and Market Days

Market Days are held on the second Saturday of every month on the historic courthouse square. The Hanging Tree on the square served as an outdoor court from 1846 to 1870.
